Lesson FAQs

Who can take lessons & what do I need to begin?

Lessons are available to all people ages 6 and up! For students 6 to 8 years, a guardian needs to be available during lessons to assist with lesson set up and to have a general idea of the lesson content to give assistance during weekly practice. All students will need either an acoustic piano or a developmentally appropriate keyboard (suggestions available) at home or in their lesson space. For online students, a wifi connected laptop/tablet, or other similar device, equipped with zoom.

Will there be performance opportunities?

Yes! For local students, studio recitals and shares are held in the spring. All students are encouraged to access performance opportunities in their communities.

What should I expect to learn?

Lessons are designed around the specific needs and interests of each student. Just beginning at the piano? We’ll start with the basics! Preparing for a school audition? Let’s get ready. Interested in building a repertoire outside of the patriarchal, western-eurocentric canon? We’ll explore music from a variety of composers and artists. Needing guidance with music theory, composition, songwriting, arranging, or accompanying yourself as a singer? We can explore all of these elements, as well!

How long is a semester? What if I have to miss a lesson?

Lessons occur from August through June, with options for prorated lessons in July if interested. For more information about our absence policy, fees, and other related questions, please see our page and info sheet on studio policies!

How often do I practice?

While practice is a very personal process, I believe to gain the full benefits of practice, it needs to be consistent, regardless of the minutes spent at your instrument. I will give specific guidance to each student based on their age and aspirations, and will work to develop good practice habits for wherever you are in your musical journey.

Are lessons available on a sliding scale?

Yes. If you face economic barriers towards accessing lessons, we happily offer classes on a sliding scale. Please fill out the “schedule lessons” form, select sliding scale lessons, and we’ll be in touch to find a fee and payment schedule that works for you. We believe in access to music study for all!
